The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced an extension of the ongoing limited voter registration exercise.

The exercise, initially set to conclude on May 27, will continue until Wednesday, May 29, 2024.

A statement from the commission said the decision comes as a remedial measure to compensate for the network issues that disrupted the process during its initial two days.

“This arrangement has been put in place to make up for the network challenges experienced during the first two (2) days of the registration exercise. The commission aims to ensure that all eligible voters who wish to register are allowed to do so.

“We urge all eligible citizens who are yet to register to visit the commission’s office in the district where they reside to register to vote,” the statement said.

Despite the setbacks, the commission said it was not considering extending the ongoing limited voter registration exercise but has made a U-turn now.

Network challenges prevented many from completing the registration process on the first day of the exercise.

Areas such as Ayawaso West Wougon, Ayawaso Central, Korle Klotey, Ayawaso East, and Ayawaso North had difficulties, and so the eligible persons who thronged the centres were left disappointed.

The commission maintained that the exercise had been smooth, with a significant increase in the number of applicants registered.

Data released by the EC indicate that as of Sunday, May 19, 2024, a total of 522,025 new voters had been registered, out of which 446,416 (85.52) are first-time voters between the ages of 18-21.

Out of the total figure, 246,455, representing 47.21 per cent of the registered voters, are males, and 275,570, representing 52.79 per cent, are females.

The EC had targeted registering a total of 623,000 voters by the end of the exercise.

Also, a total of 813 persons living with disabilities had been registered across the country.
