The Electoral Commission (EC) has declared Faustina Elikplim Akurugu of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) the winner of the Dome Kwabenya constituency parliamentary election.

This comes after the NDC opposed a decision by the EC to conduct a rerun of parliamentary elections at the Abokobi Women’s Development Centre 2 polling station in the constituency.

The party claimed their candidate, Elikplim Akurugu, had won and that the EC’s calculation was wrong.

Elikplim Akurugu was earlier declared the winner of the parliamentary election in Dome Kwabenya.

However, her victory was marred by claims of irregularities by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In a press conference on December 31, the EC said there will no longer be a rerun at the polling station.

The EC Chairperson, Jean Mensa, confirmed the decision, stating that the electoral process in the Dome Kwabenya Constituency had reached its conclusion.

“Today, we are pleased to announce that the proceedings and collation at the Dome Kwabenya Constituency have come to a close. It has gone full circle, and we are convinced beyond any shadow of a doubt that the outcome reflects the will of the people as expressed at the polls.

“Ours is not to make anybody president or MP. Ours is to ensure that our outcome and processes guarantee that the people’s choice is upheld,” she affirmed.

Announcing the results, the Returning Officer for the constituency said Elikplim Akurugu polled 50,967 votes, while her closest contender, Mike Oquaye Jr., had 50,669.
