EC considers mini voter registration before 2020 elections
The Electoral Commission of Ghana has hinted at another registration exercise before the December polls.
The exercise is to capture qualified voters who were trapped abroad as a result of COVID-19 restrictions and those who were under quarantine in Ghana during the initial registration period, among others.
Acting Director of Public Affairs of EC, Mrs Sylvia Annoh, communicated this to theghanareport.com after an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting to address concerns by political parties at the ongoing voter exhibition exercise on Thursday, September 24.
The EC started the processes on Friday, September 18 but some anomalies have generated concerns especially from the opposition NDC. Bur commission gave assurances of correcting the mistakes and further having the second registration after the exhibition.
The details and modalities are yet to be communicated but Mrs Annoh explained that “there will be continues registration which will be announced soon”.
Electoral guidelines in Ghana stipulates that a person may vote provided their name is in the certified register at least 60 days before the election.
It implies that the EC has less than two weeks to conduct the registration if the new voters are to participate in the December 2020 polls.
However, the NDC has questioned the feasibility of the move as they accuse the EC of monumental errors which needs an address.
The NDC Director of IT, Kwame Osei Agyeman-Griffiths, told theghanareport.com that by law such persons must also have a period of the exhibition to verify their particulars.
According to his assessment, it would be a difficult process considering the short time and “quantum of errors” detected so far.
