A major police operation targeting illicit drugs and organised crime in the East Legon enclave has led to the arrest of 120 suspects, including six women, in a move authorities say is part of sustained efforts to improve safety in the area.

The exercise formed part of a broader security strategy aimed at dismantling criminal networks and discouraging open drug dealing in residential and commercial parts of the enclave.

Residents reported heightened police presence as officers moved through identified hotspots during the coordinated swoop.

Following the arrests, all suspects were taken to the East Legon Police Station for screening.

Police say the process is intended to distinguish individuals directly linked to specific criminal activities from those suspected of dealing in or possessing illicit drugs.

Further investigations are expected to guide possible charges and court action.

The operation was led by ACP Saviour Ahiamadi and supported by senior officers from Police Headquarters and the Accra Region, reflecting a high level of command oversight.

Officers involved included personnel from the Police Intelligence Directorate, the Criminal Investigations Department and the National Operations Directorate, working alongside the Accra Regional Command and the East Legon Division.

The Ghana Police Service has indicated that the swoop is not a one-off exercise but part of continuous efforts to maintain law and order.
