The General Overseer of Action Chapel Churches Worldwide, Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams and President of Eastwood Anaba Ministries, Rev. Eastwood Anaba, have resigned from the National Cathedral Board of Trustees.

In a joint statement signed by Archbishop Duncan-Williams and Reverend Anaba, they clarified that their decision to resign is rooted in the government’s failure to appoint an independent accounting firm to audit all public funds contributed to the National Cathedral.

“Despite our prayers, best hopes and wishes, unfortunately, a needed audit to help restore public confidence and trust in this consequential project has not been enacted to the best of our knowledge. Since January 2023, we awaited news to no avail, regarding the findings of the audit,” the statement said.

They further expressed regret, stating, “As a matter of conscience and faith, we hereby submit our resignation from the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral”.

The National Cathedral project, intended to serve as a national place of worship and a symbol of unity and pride for Ghanaians, continues to be a subject of debate and scrutiny.

Critics have raised concerns about the allocation of public funds for a religious project, while proponents argue that it will have cultural and national significance, promoting interfaith dialogue and unity.

The resignation of the two charismatic church leaders adds to the growing list of the clergy stepping away from the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral.

In June 2022, the General Overseer of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC), Pastor Mensa Otabil, stepped down as a member of the Board of Trustees.

In a statement, the National Cathedral Secretariat said: “The Board of Trustees had to be registered as the Directors of the company. A member of the Trustees, Dr Mensa Otabil, the General Overseer of the International Central Gospel Church, had indicated that he couldn’t give the needed attention to the project, so didn’t register. So, Dr Mensa Otabil did not resign from the Board as being alleged, but excused himself at the point of registration of the Directors in July 2019”.

Pastor Otabil is not the only clergyman to step away.

In August 2022, the founder and leader of the Lighthouse Chapel International, Bishop Dag Heward-Mills, resigned from the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral project.
