John Abdulai Jinapor, Member of Parliament (MP) for Yapei-Kusawgu, has raised an alarming warning about a looming energy crisis in Ghana, citing the current insufficient fuel reserves for power generation.
Mr. Jinapor has attributed the crisis to the outgoing Nana Akufo-Addo administration’s failure to procure adequate fuel despite repeated calls for action.
In a recent statement, Mr Jinapor revealed that, as of now, the country only has enough fuel to last for about five hours.
“I have bad news for you. As of today, the confirmation we are receiving is that we have only five hours’ worth of fuel left,” he shared.
He further stressed that the nation’s fuel supply for power generation is critically low and will not last more than two days.
“If you look at the heavy fuel oil and diesel fuel, we don’t have enough to last two days. So, in two days’ time, we are likely to run out of fuel,” he added.
Mr Jinapor concluded by pointing out that the current administration has not made any fuel orders to address the shortfall, stating, “This administration has not placed any fuel orders as we speak.”
Mr Jinapor made these remarks following the swearing-in ceremony of President John Mahama in Accra on January 7, 2025.
