Drivers, passengers stranded as Oti River ferry breaks down

The ferry that transports passengers and cargo across the Oti River has broken down at Dambai in the Krachi East Municipality.

This has left several vehicles and passengers stranded at the river bank.

Some drivers who spoke to journalists said they had been at the river bank for two days.

The drivers who frequently use the route complained about the recurring breakdowns and the negative impact on the people in the area.

Passengers, who are mostly traders of fish, yam, meat, eggs, and other foodstuffs, fear their commodities would rot if they are not able to convey them to the market.

Therefore, they called for a collaborative effort between the government and Volta Lake Transport Limited (VLT) to build a bridge on the River Oti to aid their movement.

Meanwhile, the Commander of Volta Lake Transport Limited (VLT), Victor Oppong Fianko, says their mechanics are actively working on the vessel to repair the fault.

He assured that they were working around the clock to get the ferry back on the river to ease the stress on the travellers.

In August 2023, the ferry developed a major fault, which caused a setback in transportation on the river.

The mechanism responsible for allowing vehicles to board the ferry broke down, rendering it immobile.

In March 2023, the vessel again developed a mechanical fault, which forced a five-day hold on business.
