Dreams FC slam Accra Lions over call for Ghana Football reforms

Dreams FC have hit back at Accra Lions after the latter’s public call for reforms in Ghana’s football system.

Lions issued a statement on January 6, 2025, urging changes to enhance professionalism, transparency, and sportsmanship in the Ghana Premier League.

The statement followed their 1-0 defeat to Dreams FC in a matchday 16 encounter where they played with 10 men.

In response, Dreams FC questioned Accra Lions’ stance, accusing them of hypocrisy, and citing their own previous benefits from refereeing decisions.

“We are very sure this feat [finishing as runners-up last season] was achieved without any refereeing issues,” Dreams FC stated in a public release.

The Dawu-based side emphasised that, while they agree with upholding the integrity of the sport, the discussion on refereeing must be fair and based on facts.

Dreams FC also pointed to Accra Lions’ failure to acknowledge officiating inconsistencies in their earlier match against Hearts of Oak, where refereeing decisions were also called into question.

They also criticised Lions for not formally raising any complaints following the match at Tuba, adding that their public comments were part of an effort to undermine the achievements of Dreams FC.

Dreams FC also accused Lions of trying to discredit their efforts, particularly after the club’s strong run to the semifinals of the CAF Confederation Cup the previous year.

The club rejected any attempts to use them as a means to further personal agendas and called for stakeholders to focus on collective improvements rather than engage in self-serving narratives.

Dreams FC’s victory over Lions came at a time when the club had been struggling in the league, sitting 17th after 16 games.
