Dr. Wigwe was a pivotal figure in Ghana’s banking industry – Access Holdings mourns its CEO

Access Holdings Plc has confirmed the passing of Dr. Herbert Wigwe, the Company’s founding Group Chief Executive Officer and former Group Managing Director of its flagship subsidiary, Access Bank Plc.

Dr. Wigwe, alongside his wife and son, tragically lost their lives in a helicopter accident in the United States of America on Friday, February 9, 2024.

In a statement issued on Sunday, February 11, the Group expressed profound sorrow, extending condolences to his family and loved ones.

Dr. Wigwe was hailed “as a driving force and a larger-than-life personality who contributed immensely to the transformation of the Access franchise” since joining the bank in 2002.

Mr. Abubakar Jimoh, Chairman of Access Holdings, lamented the loss, describing Dr. Wigwe as a great friend and fine gentleman, known for his prodigious intellect, admirable personal qualities, and vast business experience.

He expressed confidence in the Access Group’s ability to build on Dr. Wigwe’s legacy of growth and operational excellence.

Dr. Wigwe co-founded Access Bank with Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede and served as the Bank’s Group CEO from 2014 before assuming leadership at Access Holdings in 2022.

Under his stewardship, Access Bank became Sub Saharan Africa’s largest retail bank by customer base, demonstrating his commitment to African growth and operational excellence.

Dr. Wigwe’s contributions extended beyond banking, as he was actively involved in various organizations advocating for social causes and development initiatives.

He was recognized as a two-time winner of the African Banker of the Year award and was a passionate advocate for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

His academic achievements and commitment to education were evident in the founding of Wigwe University, Africa’s first ivy league institution aimed at nurturing the next generation of leaders.
