Dr Afriyie Akoto Promises Economic Transformation Through Agriculture
A flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, has vowed to bring economic transformation by capitalizing on agriculture.
Dr Afriyie Akoto, a former Minister of Food and Agriculture, expressed confidence in the solid foundation laid for Ghana’s agriculture sector during his tenure.
Speaking to the media after submitting his nomination forms, Dr. Akoto emphasized that these foundations, comprising strategic programmes, legislations, and intellectual capacity, have the potential to revolutionize the country’s economy.
Dr. Akoto affirmed that the next crucial step towards realizing this potential is the establishment of an Agricultural Management Committee, to be headed by the President upon his assumption of office.
This committee would ensure the proper allocation of resources and investments in agriculture, facilitating sustainable growth and development.
Accompanied by campaign chairpersons and party officials, Dr. Akoto highlighted the significance of his initiated policies, including the Tree Crop Development Authority (TCDA), which promotes cashew, mango, rubber, shea, coffee, and coconut cultivation.
When fully developed, the TCDA is expected to contribute approximately $12 billion annually to Ghana’s economy.
The former minister also emphasized the success of the government’s Planting for Food and Jobs programme, which he spearheaded.
In addition, he mentioned ongoing legislative efforts, such as the proposed Poultry Development Authority, Grains Development Authority, and Horticultural Development Authority, aimed at enhancing specific agricultural sectors.
Dr. Akoto further stressed the need for increased financial support to the agriculture sector, proposing legislation requiring commercial banks to allocate a higher portion of their funds to agriculture-related initiatives.
Appealing to party delegates, Dr. Akoto urged them to vote for him as the NPP’s flagbearer, citing his commitment to revitalizing the party and steering Ghana toward prosperity.
