A severe rainstorm, accompanied by destructive winds, struck on Sunday, February 8, 2026, causing widespread devastation across the Bekwai Municipality in the Ashanti Region.
Denyaseman Catholic Senior High School (SHS) suffered significant damage, along with several other schools and communities.
The storm, which lasted for several hours, removed roofing sheets from a classroom block at Denyaseman Catholic SHS in Poano, leading to a partial collapse of the building and rendering it unusable.
The school grounds are now strewn with debris, including roofing sheets, concrete blocks, rubble, scattered desks, chairs, books, and various other educational materials.
Residents described the aftermath as heartbreaking, observing that the strong winds visibly compromised the building’s integrity before the roof was torn away.
“The winds were very strong, and we could see the roof shaking before it finally came off,” an eyewitness stated.
Academic activities have been interrupted, forcing students and teachers to evacuate the affected areas for their safety.
“The children cannot continue lessons there because it is too dangerous,” a concerned resident remarked.
The damage was not limited to the school; surrounding communities within the municipality also experienced significant destruction.
Reports indicate that numerous homes sustained severe damage, with rooftops blown off and properties devastated by the accompanying fierce winds.
Residents have voiced concerns regarding the safety of the remaining structures and are urgently seeking assistance to clear debris, provide temporary shelters, and restore essential services.
