Don’t plant trees under Low Voltage lines – ECG cautions public on Green Ghana Day

The Electricity Company of Ghana has warned against planting trees under Low Voltage Lines as a preventive measure to avoid future power outages.

The Western Regional Manager of the ECG, Engineer Emmanuel Justice Ofori said this on Friday, June 9 as Ghanaians mark the Geen Ghana Day with tree planting activities.

He urged the public not to plant trees under Low Voltage lines because mature trees may disrupt the power supply when they come into contact with the lines.

“We are advising those planting trees that we should go about planting the trees but we should be careful not to plant them directly under the lines, especially the LV lines,” he said.

Mr Ofori also added that the ECG is targeting to plant 5,000 trees in the region as part of their contribution to the celebration.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and the Forestry Commission have encouraged all Ghanaians and residents to participate in the national tree-planting exercise.

The Green Ghana Day was first launched by Government in 2021, under the auspices of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, as part of an aggressive afforestation and reforestation agenda, to restore the lost forest cover of the country.

Last year, over twenty-six million trees were planted, exceeding the target of twenty million.

A total of 10 million seedlings are expected to be planted across the country in the 2023 edition, whilst nurturing the over 30 million which were planted in 2021 and 2022.
