Dome Kwabenya: NDC opposes rerun in one polling station

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has rejected the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to conduct a rerun of parliamentary elections at the Abokobi Women’s Development Centre 2 polling station in the Dome/Kwabenya constituency.

NDC Deputy Director of Elections and IT, Rashid Tanko Computer, questioned the necessity of the rerun, arguing that their candidate, Elikplim Akurugu, had already secured victory.

“There was a margin of 1,154 votes,” Tanko explained.

“The voter population at the disputed polling station is 689. Even if the entire station voted, the outcome would not change the result. This rerun is unnecessary.”

He further accused the EC of arithmetic errors and mismanagement of the collation process, asserting, “The EC seems to have issues with calculations. Elikplim Akurugu has won, and we will not accept their so-called rerun.”

The EC announced the rerun on December 28 during collation at its Greater Accra office.

Re-collating results from three polling stations proved challenging. Two were validated, while the third was disqualified due to procedural errors, including the use of incorrect forms.

Dr Serebour Quaicoe, EC’s Director of Training, clarified the issue: “One polling station was rejected outright because the results were declared on the wrong statement of the poll. After adding the two valid results, the margin between the leading candidates narrowed to 165 votes.”

With 689 registered voters at the disputed polling station, the rerun could sway the final outcome.

However, the NDC remains firm in its stance, maintaining that their candidate’s victory is unassailable and dismissing the rerun as unwarranted.
