Dollar gift saga: Mahama has shown code of conduct is mere paper – Kabiru
The Member of Parliament for Walewale, Dr. Tiah Abdul-Kabiru Mohammed, has criticised President John Dramani Mahama for failing to uphold his code of conduct for public officials.
This criticism comes in light of the President’s recent decision to pardon Sammy Gyamfi, the acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board, after a video surfaced showing him giving an undisclosed amount of U.S. dollars to self-styled evangelist, Patricia Asiedua Asiamah, popularly known as Nana Agradaa.
The video prompted significant public outcry and raised concerns about a potential violation of Ghana’s Foreign Exchange Act and the ethical guidelines that govern public servants.
Speaking in an interview on Wednesday, May 14, the MP voiced his disappointment, calling attention to what he sees as a selective application of rules by the current administration.
“Clearly, the president has demonstrated that the code of conduct is a mere piece of paper. Mr. President has indicated that he picks and chooses who to punish and the punishment they want to mete out to anyone,” Kabiru said.
Mr. Kabiru also accused the President of protecting powerful figures while being against less influential figures within his administration.
“The president has demonstrated that he has been selective, and he will only bite the vulnerable. There are supposed to be powerful people within his government who cannot be beaten. I am disappointed that the president cannot even act on his code of conduct,” he stated.
Meanwhile, the government spokesperson, Felix Ofosu Kwakye, has refuted claims that the action of the CEO is a breach of the Code of Conduct.
He added that no act in the code indicates that Sammy Gyamfi’s action is a breach of the code provided by President Mahama to his appointees to guide their dealings under his administration.
