District level elections: Police pursue suspects for violent disturbances

The police are currently pursuing some suspects in connection with a violent disturbance during the ongoing Districts Assembly Elections at Senya Electoral Area.

The suspects, per a statement released by the police, caused damage to electoral materials and injured one person in the process on Tuesday, November 19.

A police reinforcement team took control of the situation and restored order.

However, due to the incident, the Electoral Commission (EC) decided to suspend the process and announce a new date for the election in the area.

The police have assured that the perpetrators would be arrested to face justice.

The district-level elections were expected to take place in 6,215 electoral areas across 216 metropolitan, municipal, and district assemblies except the Nkoranza North and South in the Bono East Region.

In an earlier statement, the Electoral Commission (EC) said over 66,000 candidates registered to contest the polls.

Of the figure, 18,755 are contesting to become assembly members, while 47,502 want to become Unit Committee members, totalling 66,257 candidates.
