The Public Relations Officer for the Concerned Drivers Association, David Agboado, has urged the general public to disregard reports of a 30 percent increment in transport fares.

This comes after a press statement released on Monday, February 4, indicated that the driver unions intend to begin the implementation of the 30 percent increment from March 7, 2024.

According to the PRO for the Concerned Drivers Association, the statement on Monday was issued by three of their regional chairmen, without authorization.

Mr. Agboado explained that such announcements and decisions must come from the national executives.

He also revealed that the regional executives have since been sanctioned for their insubordination.

“The three regional officers, as we know, are very powerful in the transport sector. The Greater Accra, Central, and Ashanti Regional officers wield much power in the industry. But they should not take their numbers or the size of their circle to do whatever they want like they did yesterday.

“As I speak to you, we have sanctioned them. They have been suspended for three months,” he revealed.

Mr. Agboado said the coalition of commercial transport operators is yet to agree on a date for a possible increase in transport fares.

It will be recalled that the Transport Operators Union and the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana announced a 30 percent hike in transport fares, effective Thursday, March 7, 2024.

According to the operators, the decision to increase fares is due to the government’s failure to address their concerns.

In a joint press release, the two bodies explained that the continuous rise in fuel prices has had a significant impact on their livelihoods, leading to financial strains and hardships in maintaining operations.
