Demolish Tollbooths, Or We Will Do It Ourselves – Drivers Tell Government

The Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana (C-DAG) has called on the government to demolish all tollbooths nationwide.

According to the drivers, the abandoned toll booths are causing accidents which have claimed several lives.

A statement by the association said after the booths were decommissioned, no measures were put in place to regulate the traffic flow at the locations, leading to numerous crashes.

“The Kasoa and Motorway toll booths have recorded the most dangerous and life-threatening accidents, and just Sunday, September 3 2023, another one occurred at the Tema toll plaza,” the statement said.

They, therefore, asked the government to immediately demolish the structures, or they would take the law into their own hands.

“As a matter of urgency, demolish all those tollbooths or take steps to decommission them according to this year’s budget statement presented by the finance ministry.

“Failure on the part of the government to do any of these may cause us to carry out the demolition by ourselves as we can’t afford to put our lives at risk in the line of contributing to national development,” they threatened.

The government scrapped all tolls on public roads in the 2022 Budget and Economic Policy presented to parliament on Wednesday, November 17.

The booths have since been non-functional and death traps.

The road tolls were, however, re-introduced during the 2023 budget presentation on Thursday, November 24, 2022, but are yet to be implemented.
