Kumasi Asante Kotoko SC has claimed victory in the inaugural Democracy Cup, defeating Accra Hearts of Oak 2-1 at the Accra Sports Stadium.

This marks Kotoko’s third consecutive win over their arch-rivals, having previously beaten them 3-2 and 2-0 in the 2023-2024 Ghana Premier League season.

The match was the centerpiece of a celebration marking 30 years of democratic governance in Ghana, led by Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin.

A pre-match game featuring parliamentarians and former Black Stars players saw the Ghana Parliament side win 3-1.

However, some parliamentarians expressed concerns about the pitch condition after the game.

Kotoko’s win was sealed by Justice Blay’s penalty kick and Peter Amidu’s shot, which should have been saved by goalkeeper Kwesi Nketiah.

Hearts of Oak got what turned out to be a consolation goal in the 50th minute through Asamoah Boateng.
