The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to restoring order in the Central Business District (CBD), emphasising that the ongoing decongestion operation is not a temporary measure.
Speaking to the press on Tuesday, May 20, following the launch of the exercise, the Mayor made it clear that the initiative is a sustained campaign aimed at removing unauthorised structures, clearing street obstructions, and reclaiming public spaces to improve traffic flow and pedestrian safety.
The decongestion effort, spearheaded by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) in partnership with the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly (KoKMA), forms part of a broader strategy to enforce city by-laws, reduce congestion, and enhance sanitation across key parts of the capital.
The first phase of the operation targeted known hotspots such as Kinbu Road to Railways, ECG Junction to the King Tackie Tawiah Statue, and Opera Square to Adabraka, areas frequently overwhelmed by street vending and traffic bottlenecks.
City authorities say the campaign marks a deliberate and long-term move to restore order, ensure public safety, and enhance the livability of the capital.
