Deal with “miscreants” behind Tamale District Court attack – JUSAG to police
The Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG) has denounced the violent attack on the Tamale District Court 1 by some “unscrupulous” residents.
On Monday, August 28, 2023, an angry mob invaded the premises and pelted the court with stones.
According to reports, the irate residents were unhappy with how the police were handling the case against an alleged drug dealer.
An amateur video from the court premises captured chaotic scenes and gunfire as police tried to get the situation under control.
The police later arrested 13 of the perpetrators.
Reacting to the situation, JUSAG described the attack as unlawful and barbaric.
“In no uncertain terms, JUSAG unreservedly condemns the barbaric act of the miscreants. We also wish to commend the Ghana Police Service for their swift intervention with reinforcement that saved the properties and lives of the
Magistrates, Court Officials, Lawyers, Litigants, and other court users during the sad event,” a statement from JUSAG said.
The group also called on the police to “deal decisively” with the 13 suspects in their custody and intensify the security of all officers at the Tamale District Court.
“The general public is reminded that the judiciary exists for all citizens and that justice is administered in accordance with the law irrespective of the persons involved. All citizens owe it a duty to support our courts to operate in an atmosphere free of all forms of intimidation and violence,” the statement added.
