Day-old baby abandoned in uncompleted building at Garu

Police have retrieved a newborn baby girl which was abandoned at an uncompleted building at Garu in the Upper East Region.

The baby was discovered by some primary school children who strayed into the building while playing after school hours at about 3 pm on Tuesday.

Sammy Kay, a reporter at Upper East Region’s Quality FM told theghanareport.com that the school children went to inform their mother who rushed to inform the police.

A team was dispatched to the scene and the fresh baby covered in blood was picked up and sent to the Garu Presby Health Centre for medical attention.

Confirming the incident, Garu District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Daniel Yaro, told theghanareport.com that: “The baby is in safe hands in the custody of the social welfare who are making provisions of shelter”.

He revealed that the police have opened investigations into the case to unravel how the baby ended up at the location.

On January 2, 2020, a day-old baby was discovered in a school’s toilet in the Atebubu-Amantin District of the Bono East Region.

The assemblyman for the Atebubu-Zongo electoral area, Takiyudeen Issa, told the press that the security man of the school reported of cries of a baby coming from the toilet. They made an attempt to check the toilets only to find a baby wrapped in cloths and dumped.

The baby was given a bath and sent to the police and subsequently the Atebubu Government Hospital.

A 23-year-old woman was arrested by the police for also dumping her five-year-old son in a well at Ogome, a suburb of Somanya, in the Eastern Region in April 2019.

Rita Dede, who was said to have confessed that she had dumped her son in the well due to neglect by the baby’s father.

Similarly, Memunatu Mustapha, a 29-year-old lady was picked up by police in Ashaiman in the Greater Accra Region. She was suspected to have dropped her day-old baby boy into a public toilet manhole at Ashaiman Lebanon on December 3, 2018.

Also, the Kade District Magistrate Court presided over by Madam Felicia Anane- Antwi had to sentence a 26-year-old woman to 24 months imprisonment with hard labour for throwing her day-old baby girl away on a refuse dump.

The baby was found dead on the dump hill with part of the body eaten by pigs. The woman, Comfort Asor, also known as Ataa Panin, unemployed, pleaded guilty.
