David Raya sends message to Aaron Ramsdale over Arsenal starter spot
David Raya has revealed he has been given no assurances of his new-found spot in Arsenal’s starting lineup by manager Mikel Arteta.
Raya, who joined Arsenal on an initial loan from Brentford over the summer, has now started the last two games in place of usual starter Aaron Ramsdale, with Arteta claiming his divisive decision was made purely for tactical reasons.
Pressed on his promotion to the starting lineup, Raya insisted his battle with Ramsdale is simply part of life as a Premier League goalkeeper.
“That’s his choice, it’s not my choice,” Raya said of Arteta’s decision to select him over Ramsdale recently.
“If Aaron comes back in he needs to fight for the team and to win games. I think it’s the first time that two top goalies are on the same team. That’s just part of football now.
“The gaffer wants two top players for each position and that’s what we have to work with.”
While he is currently enjoying his time as Arsenal’s starter, Raya admitted he has been given no assurances over his continuation in the team.
“I played the last two games and I don’t know what’s going to happen on Sunday,” he said.
90min understands that Ramsdale is currently happy to fight for his position and no talks have been held over a potential departure at this point.
Chelsea are tracking Ramsdale’s situation as they continue their search for a new goalkeeper but the England international is focused on regaining his spot from Raya in the coming weeks.
