Dangerous Load

A truck overloaded with bags of charcoal today was the reason for a disturbing surprise in bystanders who witnessed this scene. Worse still, there were humans atop the load in the bucket of the truck.

Acts of lawlessness on the part of the people who paraded the oddity to sights of people at Madina, Accra. It was risky for the lives of those who sat on the load as a tilt of the truck to the sides could have sent the consignment and the humans sitting on it, the wrong way and tumbling down.

Are the police the only eligible group to make arrests in instances such as this revulsive act? In the absence of the police, who else can intervene to right the wrong to save or avert a crisis?

The Ghana Report recalls an accident on the Accra-Kumasi highway in which a man who had pitched himself to a spot on the load in an open truck, fell to his death on the night journey. The truck piled with foodstuffs loaded in the Bono region en route from Kumasi to Accra, was scraped on its side by a speeding vehicle in the opposite direction.  On impact, the victim who lay on the load fell off the truck and died on the spot.
