A radio show host with Dagbon Radio, Sadiq Abubakari Gariba, was reportedly attacked while hosting a live show in Tamale in the Northern Region, the same day the world marked World Press Freedom Day.

In a viral video, a former Deputy Communication Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Hardi Pagaza, and another person were captured storming the facility on Wednesday, May 3.

The attackers immediately held the broadcaster by the neck to drag him out of the studio.

The scuffle became intense as the presenter fought off his attackers, with all three leaving the studio after the heated exchange.

It is unclear what led to the altercation, but reports suggest that the Dagbon Radio journalist had criticized the former NDC communicator for talking about the Abudu and Andani conflict on a campaign platform.

Mr Pagazaa didn’t take his criticisms kindly and decided to attack him in the studio.

The incident has sparked outrage among Ghanaians, with many calling for the former NDC official to be brought to justice.

Also, the attack on Gariba comes just a day after World Press Freedom Day, a day dedicated to celebrating the fundamental principles of press freedom and defending media professionals who face attacks for simply doing their job.

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) ranked Ghana 30th out of 180 countries in its 2021 World Press Freedom Index, but this attack on a journalist in the Northern Region highlights the ongoing challenges journalists face in the country.

The police are currently investigating the matter.
