Cut DStv prices by Sept. 6 or shut down – Sam George to MultiChoice Ghana

The Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has issued an ultimatum to MultiChoice Ghana, operators of DStv, demanding a reduction in subscription fees by September 6, 2025, or risk having their license revoked.

Speaking at the Digital Africa Summit in Accra, the minister stressed that the government is determined to protect Ghanaian consumers and ensure that service pricing reflects recent improvements in the national economy.

“They have until September 6. If there is no resolution by then, MultiChoice’s operations in Ghana will be shut down. No company is above the collective interest of the Ghanaian people,” he declared.

Mr. George also revealed that MultiChoice has consistently failed to comply with directives from the National Communications Authority (NCA), including the submission of mandatory pricing data as required under the Electronic Communications Act.

He disclosed that the company has been accumulating fines for its noncompliance.

“About 15 or 16 days ago, I met with MultiChoice and imposed a daily fine of GH¢10,000 for their refusal to submit the required information. As of now, they owe between GH¢150,000 and GH¢170,000. The NCA will recover that money,” he said.

The minister further stated that government efforts to get MultiChoice to reduce its subscription fees by 30 percent, in line with current economic conditions, have been unsuccessful.

“I’ve personally engaged them, and asked for a 30% reduction in pricing. But they have refused to comply,” he added.
