Personnel of the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) at the Kulungugu border in the Pusiga District were involved in a physical altercation yesterday, July 24, over the payment of some border fees.
According to eyewitnesses, the scuffle started when an importer from Burkina Faso refused to pay a GH₵5 booking fee demanded by immigration service personnel.
The importer had already completed the necessary paperwork and paid relevant fees to the Customs Division, sparking a disagreement over the additional charge by personnel of the Ghana Immigration Service.
When the importer reported the incident to the Customs Division, personnel from the Customs Division intervened to facilitate free passage but were met with resistance from Ghana Immigration Service staff.
The situation quickly escalated into a scuffle, with personnel from both agencies engaging in a heated exchange that lasted over an hour.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the incident has raised concerns about the lack of coordination and communication between the two security agencies.
District Chief Executive for Pusiga, Zubeiru Abdulai, confirmed the incident to TV3 and said that he had held meetings with border heads of both agencies to resolve the disagreements and prevent future clashes.
