The local union of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is appealing to President Akufo-Addo to check the activities of land guards on their lands at Pokuase in the Ga West Municipal Assembly.
According to the union, the encroached lands have been given to about four companies on long term leases.
Speaking to Citi News, the President of the union, Micheal Amoo-Gyesi, said several workers are afraid to visit the site due to previous assault from land guards.
“We are appealing to the government to make sure that we get our lease on the land and the portion that has been encroached is also stopped. Because without the lease, we cannot hold on to the land because there are always land guards on the land. Some of our staff cannot even go on the land even though they are supposed to work. They are afraid of their lives.”
The phenomenon of land guards is the practice where private citizens hire thugs to protect their lands due to the culture of the double sale in Accra.
It is rife in the capital and other parts of the country.
Some homes, structures and walls have been destroyed by land guards in the area despite individuals claiming legitimate ownership over the lands and houses.
Victims have complained about the poor manner in which the police handle land guards.
