Crystal Palace star Marc Guéhi faces possible sanction for religious message on rainbow armband
Crystal Palace defender Marc Guéhi may face disciplinary action from the Football Association (FA) after writing “I love Jesus” on his rainbow captain’s armband during Saturday’s match against Newcastle.
The FA prohibits “any political or religious message” on captain’s armbands, and Guéhi’s act could result in a charge under these regulations.
Updated guidelines introduced last summer mandate that captains’ armbands must remain simple and comply with Law 4, which addresses the use of slogans, statements, images, and advertisements.
The England defender’s message, written on an armband used during Stonewall’s Rainbow Laces campaign from November 29 to December 5, may be viewed as a breach of these rules, potentially aggravating his situation and increasing the likelihood of sanctions.
Meanwhile, Ipswich Town issued a statement on Monday, backing their captain, Sam Morsy, for choosing not to wear the rainbow armband during a match against Nottingham Forest, citing his religious convictions.
