Covid-19: Erring pastors won’t be protected’-Rev Prof Frimpong Manso

The Chairman of the Ghana Pentecostal Council, Rev Prof Paul Frimpong-Manso, says church leaders will not protect pastors that breach protocols regulating the opening of churches.

He said the church would not mediate for erring pastors who flout the law, as the country sought to limit the spread of covid-19 during religious services.

“If any church does not comply, we’ll give them up,” he emphasised while giving the assurance that the church leaders would do peer monitoring to insulate the country from a new wave of infections.

He spoke at a press briefing at the Ministry of Information to update the public on the covid-19 protocols guiding the reopening of churches and mosques.

Under the new guidelines, churches and mosques are expected to host maximum 100 worshipers per sessions and must keep a register of attendants.

All churches are also expected to register with the Registrar-General and deposit proof of their registration with the metropolitan, municipal or district assembly in their locality.

The opening of churches in Ghana comes at a time similar decisions in Germany resulted in the flare-up of cases.

With that probably in mind, Rev Prof Frimpong -Manso said, “No church leader would will mediate for anyone. This is life and death matter. We will all fight this battle together.”,

He said he would counsel his peers to rigidly enforce a “no face mask, no entry,” policy, while observing social distance and all other protocols that would keep their congregants safe.

The leader of the Assemblies of God Church said the churches were prepared and organised to deliver and promote the safety of their congregants.

He said the church leaders appreciated the efforts of the government for giving them the opportunity to worship, adding that since they had been part of the consultations from day one, they were more than conscious of the dangers.

“We are assuring that we will not fail you. As the life and salt of our communities, we will make sure this covid is nipped in the bud,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Minister of chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Kofi Dzamesi, has warned that erring churches and mosques would be shut down and their leaders prosecuted.

President Akufo-Addo on Sunday announced that religious services can resume, as the government eases restrictions imposed in the fight against the deadly coronavirus.

In his 10th address to the nation, the president said, “With effect from Friday, June 5, 2020, we will begin stage one of the process of easing restrictions. An abridged format of religious activities can commence.
