An Accra High Court has set October 19, 2023, to rule on the contempt case against the Minister for Trade and Industry, Kobina Tahiru Hammond.

The contempt application was filed by the newly sworn-in Member of Parliament for Assin North James Gyakye Quayson.

Per the statement of the case, the respondent [KT Hammond] categorically pronounced Mr. Quayson, who is in court for perjury, as guilty of the charges for which he is standing trial.

The respondent further said the Assin North MP will go to prison for the said perjury and forgery charges.

According to Mr Quayson, the words of the respondent which have been widely publicised nationally and internationally, are violating his right to be presumed innocent as well as the right to a fair trial.

The applicant said, such prejudicial comments undermine the lawful judicial process and may even bring the said judicial process into disrepute as it will create in the minds of members of the public that no other conclusion other than that pronounced by the respondent can occur.

The court will therefore make a determination of the matter on the set date.

The court presided over by Justice Mary Ekue Yanzuh also ordered the parties to file their written submissions simultaneously by August 31.
