The Ho Magistrate Court has placed Godsway Kwaku Dogbey, a driver affiliated with the Volta Regional Health Directorate of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), into police custody after the prosecution requested a postponement of his plea in a case related to narcotics.
Dogbey was apprehended on January 23, 2026, following an operation led by the Volta Regional Police Command, which involved the Drug Law Enforcement Unit, Police Intelligence Unit, and the Regional CID.
According to police reports, the suspect was transporting 26 sacks of materials believed to be Indian hemp from the Fume area through Ho towards Sogakope in a white American Ford Wagon marked with Ghana Health Service insignia.
Prosecutor Sergeant Micheal Kadey stated that the suspect allegedly did not stop at the Ziave Police Checkpoint, resulting in a pursuit until the vehicle was stopped near the Tarso Hotel in Ho.
A subsequent search, carried out in the presence of the suspect, uncovered over 2,000 wrapped compressed leaves thought to be narcotic substances, with an estimated street value amounting to millions of Ghana cedis.
When the case was presented, prosecutors requested that the accused’s plea be postponed to facilitate the presentation of facts and further investigations.
The court approved this request, instructed the accused to fully cooperate with the police, and warned public servants to exercise caution due to the sensitive nature of their duties.
The court acknowledged the exhibits as suspected narcotic substances seized by the Volta Regional Police Command and remanded the accused into police custody. Dogbey is scheduled to reappear before the Ho Circuit Court on February 5, 2026.
In the meantime, the Volta Regional Health Directorate has confirmed in a press release that the suspect is indeed a driver with the Directorate, but emphasized that it has commenced internal procedures, including the establishment of a committee of inquiry while cooperating with ongoing police investigations.
