Court orders police to submit bill of indictment in Ahmed Suale Case

The court hearing the case of murdered investigative journalist Ahmed Suale has ordered the police to submit a bill of indictment following continued delays in the prosecution’s preparation for trial.

Lawyers for the prime suspect, Daniel Owusu Koranteng, have expressed frustration over the lack of progress since their client was first arraigned on March 18.

They noted that despite a revised charge sheet filed on April 2, no substantial documentation has been presented to the Attorney General’s office for the next steps in the trial process.

Kofi Essel, a member of the defence team, told the court: “There’s still no dossier ready for the Attorney General, and nothing has been done towards committal proceedings. This shouldn’t take so long.”

Daniel Owusu Koranteng, initially charged with one count of murder, is now facing an additional charge of abetment of crime.

Prosecution alleges that he led two others—currently on the run—to Ahmed Suale’s residence shortly before the journalist was killed.

The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Nana Afua Bamfoa Bamfo, pleaded for more time, stating they had yet to finalize the necessary documents for submission. The Accra High Court has already denied bail to the accused.

The presiding judge, Susan Nyarkotey, criticized the prosecution’s delays and issued a directive for all required documents to be filed before the next hearing on May 13, when committal proceedings are expected to begin.

Kwaku Osei Asare, counsel for Ahmed Suale, expressed disappointment with the lack of urgency. “We had hoped the disclosures would be ready by now,” he said.

The defence warned that the accused continues to remain in remand without a timely trial, raising concerns over due process and justice.
