Court dismisses K.T. Hammond’s petition, fines him GH¢60K

The High Court in Obuasi has thrown out an election petition filed by former Trade and Industry Minister, K.T. Hammond, challenging the victory of Godwin Animli Dorgbadzi Dorani in the Adansi Asokwa parliamentary election.

On Tuesday, August 19, 2025, Justice Kwabena Twumasi ruled that the case lacked merit and dismissed it outright.

The court also ordered Mr. Hammond to pay GH¢60,000 in legal costs, stating that the petition had wasted the court’s time.

Mr. Hammond, who served as Member of Parliament for Adansi Asokwa for over two decades, lost the December 2024 election to Mr. Dorani of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The NDC candidate won with 14,229 votes, beating Mr. Hammond by a margin of 954 votes.

Unwilling to accept the result, Mr. Hammond filed a petition on January 15, 2025, seeking to overturn the outcome.

However, he failed to appear before the court on three separate occasions, prompting the judge to dismiss the case.

Richard Andy, counsel for Mr. Dorani, welcomed the decision and expressed confidence in the court’s ruling.

With the case now settled, Mr. Dorani retains his seat as the duly elected MP for Adansi Asokwa, closing the chapter on one of the few post-election legal challenges from the 2024 polls.
