An Accra High Court has dismissed a contempt case against the Trade and Industry Minister Kobina Tahiru Hammond.

The contempt application was filed by the Member of Parliament for Assin North James Gyakye Quayson.

Per the statement of the case, the respondent [KT Hammond] categorically pronounced Mr. Quayson, who is in court for perjury, as guilty of the charges for which he is standing trial.

The respondent further said the Assin North MP will go to prison for the said perjury and forgery charges.

According to Mr Quayson, the words of the respondent which have been widely publicised nationally and internationally, are violating his right to be presumed innocent as well as the right to a fair trial.

The applicant said, such prejudicial comments undermine the lawful judicial process and may even bring the said judicial process into disrepute.

However, in a judgment delivered on Thursday, October 19, 2023, the court found that there was insufficient evidence presented to support a conviction.

The presiding judge Justice Mary Maame Ekue Yanzuh further noted that Hammond’s remarks, which had been the subject of the contempt case, were not demonstrated to have had the intent to interfere with the criminal proceedings against Quayson.
