The criminal trial of the newly sworn-in Member of Parliament for Assin North James Gyakye Quayson has been adjourned to July 6.
The adjournment follows the swearing-in ceremony in Parliament on Tuesday, July 4.
Parliament had submitted a letter to the Accra High Court, notifying it of the scheduled swearing-in.
Consequently, both the prosecution and the defense requested for an adjournment of the proceedings, which was granted by the court.
Following the adjournment, Abraham Amaliba, the Head of Legal Affairs of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and counsel for Mr Quayson expressed satisfaction with the decision.
He also supported the calls for the Attorney General to enter a Nolle prosequi, a formal notice of discontinuation of prosecution, in the case.
In the same vein, Deputy Attorney General Alfred Tuah Yeboah, who did not oppose the request for adjournment during the proceedings, expressed the hope that Parliament’s act of issuing excuse letters for the accused would not become a regular occurrence in the trial.
Mr Quayson is currently facing five charges — deceit of a public officer, forgery of a passport or travel certificate, knowingly making a false statement, perjury, and false declaration for office.
