Corruption complain against Mahama “without merit” – CHRAJ
The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has thrown out an alleged case of vote-buying and corruption against former President John Dramani Mahama.
CHRAJ refused to investigate the claims on the grounds that former President Mahama was not a public officer. Hence, it was not within the jurisdiction of the Commission to institute a probe against him.
Additionally, CHRAJ said that Mr Mahama “is not complicit in any ongoing corruption investigation by the Commission involving any public officer(s).”
The petition, filed by a New Patriotic Party (NPP) affiliated group, Truth and Accountability Forum, claimed that ahead of the presidential and parliamentary primaries of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in 2019, Mr Mahama presented some 40 vehicles to the party.
In their view, the action of Mr Mahama claiming influenced the results of the elections, leading to Mr Mahama’s selection as flagbearer ahead of the 2020 polls.
They also requested that the Commission investigate the source of the funding for the 40 vehicles donated to the party.
The pressure group filed its complaint against Mahama at the Commission in June 2019.
