Contrctors have abandoned roads leading to fuel depots – Tanker Drivers
The Ghana National Petroleum Tanker Drivers Union have revealed that contractors fixing the roads leading to various fuel depots have abandoned the sites.
It will be recalled that the the tanker drivers declared an indefinite sit-down industrial action, on Monday, June 26, 2023, over the deplorable state of the roads.
However, the strike was suspended on the third day, when Minister of Roads and Highways, Mr Kwasi Amoako-Atta, intervened with the promise to fix the roads.
But according to the Vice Chairman of the union, Sunday Alabi, they will go on another strike if the contractors do not return to work.
He said although parts of the roads are motorable, there are still more improvements to be done.
“As we speak now, the contractors are not on the road the way they started the work. In Kumasi, there is no contractor now, and the same is true for Takoradi.
“They have made the roads passable, but they are not complete. Work has started, but for some time now, it has been slow. If you talk of the regional depots and Tema, it is true that the roads are passable, but they are not complete. We look forward to their promise of finishing it,” he said.
The minister had earlier lauded the progress of work on the Tema Valco Roundabout through the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), to the Kpone junction, in the Greater Accra Region.
He stated that the contractor, Joshob Construction Limited, had done remarkable work within a short period.
According to the minister the contractor had completed five out of the six coverts, on the 7.1 kilometre roads,- indicating 25 per cent of the total work completed.
He added that the four-kilometre road from the Kpone Junction through the Kpone- Kokompe to the Kpone barrier had also been awarded to the same contractor.
