Concerns about PTA levies

I am writing to bring to your attention concerns regarding the Parents/Teachers Association (PTA) levy imposed by the Okakwei North Municipal Education Director through the School Improvement Support Officers (SISOs) and head teachers.

Specifically, the PTA levies outlined below have been officially sanctioned by Ghana Education Service. Five per cent for school management; PTA teaching/learning levy, GH¢5.00; ICT levy, GH¢5.00; security levy, GH¢10.00; sports levy, GH¢15.00; culture levy, GH¢5.00, reading levy, GH¢5.00; sanitation levy, GH¢5.00; utility levy, GH¢10.00; maintenance levy, GH¢5.00; health and safety levy, GH¢10.00; garbage levy, GH¢5.00; printing of exams by the municipal education director for first and third exams; science resource practical fee, GH¢70.00; food GH¢20.00; centre, GH¢30.00; T&T GH¢30.00 and admission fees: Form, GH¢10.00 and entrance, GH¢20.00.

From sanitation to admission, all levies imposed already exist, so why these? We are the only municipality collecting these levies.

The Ministry of Education (MoE) must allow the unit schools to curb this indiscipline by head teachers and teachers.

The head teachers and teachers are aware that the management unit cannot sanction them, resulting in indiscipline in the unit’s basic schools.

When the management unit was in control, there was discipline.

We respectfully request clarification on whether the MoE has sanctioned these levies.

Joe Boye, Akweteman.
