Concerned Drivers Association Threaten To Increase Transport Fares

The Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana wants to unilaterally increase transport fares after the latest increments in fuel prices.

Fuel prices were increased in the second pricing window of October, with diesel being sold at GH₵ 15.99 and petrol at GH₵ 13.10 per litre at most pumps in the country.

Public Relations Officer of the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana, David Agboado, said the increment is having a dire consequence on the operations of transport operators.

He said the situation would compel them to adjust fares upwards if the government fails to intervene immediately.

“If we are not able to do what is needed for the drivers, the drivers themselves will take the law into their own hands and charge [whichever prices they want].

“We need not negotiate with the government, but it has been a norm that GPRTU has practised for years,” he said in an interview with Citi FM, monitored by The Ghana Report.

Ahead of a meeting with the government over transport fare increments, Mr. Agboado revealed that “their expectations were in line with the up to forty (40%) per cent increment proposed by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union”.

Mr. Agboado added that since the fare was increased in May 2022, the fuel prices keep rising, but drivers are compelled to maintain the same fares being charged.

The concerned drivers are appealing to the government to adjust the fares as soon as possible.
