Complete SIM Registration Or Face Permanent Block – Ursula Issues Final Warning
The Minister of Communication and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has announced that about eight million mobile subscribers risk getting their SIM cards permanently blocked over failure to complete the re-registration process.
Telecommunication providers deactivated some eight million unregistered SIM cards on Thursday, June 1, after a May 31 deadline.
Providing an update on the status of the SIM re-registration exercise in Parliament on Thursday, June 8, the Minister asked those affected to take immediate action to complete the second phase of the process.
Failure to do so, she said, will attract a permanent block.
She added that they still had a chance to retrieve their numbers but stressed that it was crucial to act promptly as the National Communication Authority(NCA) would announce a deadline after which the SIM card would be permanently blocked.
Mrs Owusu-Ekuful further urged the affected individuals to contact the Mobile Network Operators(MNOs) to assist in resolving the incomplete registration issues.
“After duly registering and completing the second phase of the process, the owners of the SIM cards will have their numbers reinstated. However, they must act timely,” she said.
Meanwhile, she assured that the MNOs are working with the Bank of Ghana to facilitate the retrieval of funds for individuals whose monies are locked up in mobile money accounts.
“These subscribers will not be able to transact money mobile-related activities. However, we are working with the Bank of Ghana to ensure that these subscribers are able to retrieve funds upon the presentation of a valid ID and going through the required processes.”
