Residents and workers who travel daily between Tema and Afienya have welcomed the return of passenger rail services along the Tema Mpakadan corridor, describing it as a relief from traffic stress while appealing for extended operating hours to better serve late-closing workers.
Many commuters say the train has transformed their daily journeys by cutting down travel time, reducing congestion on the busy Tema Afienya road and providing a safer and more predictable option compared to road transport.
For workers who previously spent long hours stuck in traffic, the service has brought renewed confidence in public transportation.
Despite the positive feedback, passengers say the current schedule does not fully meet the needs of everyone who relies on the service.
Afternoon and evening workers in particular say they struggle to get home once train operations end for the day, forcing them back onto the congested road network.
The Tema Mpakadan railway passenger service began operations in October 2025 under the Ghana Railway Development Authority as part of the Ghana Burkina Faso Railway Interconnectivity Project.
Beyond passenger movement, the rail line plays a key role in linking Tema to Mpakadan, where freight is transported through the Volta Lake to northern Ghana and Burkina Faso, supporting trade and economic activity.
Currently, passenger trains run between Tema and Afienya three times daily and serve hundreds of commuters.
