CLOGSAG begins indefinite strike today
The Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) has begun a nationwide indefinite strike.
The industrial action is to demand better conditions of service.
Consequently, most staff stayed away from offices as others who reported to work were dressed in red attire.
Various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) and other government agencies had a handful of staff at the premises bringing operations to a standstill.
In a statement signed by the Executive Secretary of CLOGSAG, Isaac Bampoe Addo, all relevant stakeholders were served with the notice of the action on 22 December 2021.
“This is to confirm the National Executive Council (NEC) decision that from 20 January 2022, the Civil and Local Government Association, Ghana (CLOGSAG) will embark on a nationwide strike to press home their demand for better conditions of service. By this letter, all CLOGSAG members in the Ministries Departments and Agencies, as well as the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies, are informed to stay at home from Thursday 20, January 2022 until further notice.”
“In a similar vein, by this letter, all Chief Directors, Heads of Departments, Regional Coordinating Directors, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Coordinating Directors are duly informed,” the statement read.
Earlier, the Head of Local Government Service, Dr Nana Ato Arthur, had appealed to CLOGSAG members to rescind their decision.
He assured them that the government was working around the clock to address their concerns.
However, the CLOGSAG members defied his appeal, stating that “they deserve better conditions of service now.”
The industrial action is due to delays in approving a new salary structure for thousands of civil servants across the country.
The Central Regional Secretary of the Association, Alhaji Apam Nuhu, explained in December 2021 that over a year after their proposed salary structure was sent to the Finance Ministry to deal with it, they are yet to communicate anything to them despite persistent reminders.
