Clement Quartey,Ghana’s first Olympic medallist passes on
Clement Ike Quartey, Ghana’s first-ever Olympic medalist, passed away on November 2nd in the United Kingdom at the age of 86.
Sources at the Ghana Boxing Authority have confirmed his death.
Clement, the older brother of the legendary Ghanaian former World Champion Ike “Bazooka” Quartey, gained prominence when he represented Ghana at the Summer Olympics in Rome in 1960, competing in the Light Welterweight category.
He won a silver medal, making him the first Ghanaian and Black African to achieve this feat at the Olympics. Additionally, he secured a gold medal at the 1962 Commonwealth Games held in Perth, Australia.
