CIHRM to enforce stricter regulations for HR practitioners – CEO

The Chief Executive Officer of the Chartered Institute of Human Resource Management Ghana (CIHRM), Dr Francis Eduku, has disclosed plans to enforce stricter regulations governing the practice of human resource (HR) management in the country.

Speaking at the launch of the CIHRM Sunyani Regional Chapter and its maiden conference, Dr Eduku said employers must prioritise the engagement of trained and certified HR professionals to manage the human capital of their organisations.

According to him, the HR profession has evolved significantly and is now fully regulated by law, a development that demands higher standards and accountability from practitioners.

“The HR profession is no longer as it used to be. The profession is now regulated and backed by law, and you cannot practise as a human resource management professional or provide HR training if you are not a registered member of the Chartered Institute of Human Resource Management, Ghana,” he stated.

Dr Eduku further disclosed that CIHRM would soon intensify the enforcement of existing laws to ensure that only qualified professionals are allowed to perform HR functions nationwide.

He stressed that the era of unlicensed individuals occupying HR roles in organisations has come to an end.

“Sooner or later, we are coming out stronger, and if you are not a member of the Institute, you cannot practise HR in this country,” he said.

He added that HR roles should be handled strictly by trained and certified professionals, not by individuals from other disciplines.

“We want HR to be done by trained HR professionals — not accountants, not engineers, not evaluators — but professionals who are trained, developed and certified by the Chartered Institute of Human Resource Management, Ghana,” he noted.

Dr Eduku explained that CIHRM operates under Act 1020 of 2020, which mandates the Institute to promote professional training in human resource management and regulate HR practice in Ghana.

He therefore urged chief executives, managing directors, managers, university communities, as well as public and private institutions, to allow professional HR practitioners to help transform their organisations.
