CID goes after ‘bad nuts’ in the police service
The Criminal Investigations Department has begun investigations into two reported extortion cases by a police patrol team in the country’s capital, Accra.
The police said it received a complaint on extortion from two police stations on May 21, 2021.
A report at the Kaneshie Police Station suggested that about five police officers armed and onboard an Operation Calm Life Police had accosted a passenger in an Uber vehicle around 2:00 am.
The said officers reportedly accused the passenger of being a fraudster and arrested him, asking the Uber driver to leave.
Per the report, the officers forced him to transfer GHC 20,000 into a Mobile Money (MoMo) account and abandoned him to his fate.
The police also indicated that a similar report was earlier made at the Achimota Police Station by a complainant on the same day, around 11:23 pm.
He is said to have been driving an unregistered Mercedez Benz when he was stopped by three policemen at Hatsoo, off the Atomic-Madina road.
“According to the complainant, the policemen searched his car, after which he was arrested on the grounds of being a cyber fraudster. He was then escorted to Silver Star Towers at Airport and forced to withdraw a sum of GHC 20,000 from his ATM for them,” a release from the police explained.
The Police Command has pledged to thoroughly investigate the allegations and take punitive actions against the perpetrators.
