A Chinese national serving a one-year jail term at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison has escaped.
Wang Xiao was in prison following his conviction of theft and other criminal-related offences.
The inmate was apprehended in Tema and later moved to Nsawam Prison.
According to reports, he feigned illness and was subsequently transferred to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for medical attention.
On February 7, 2024, while still on admission, he managed to escape from the hospital.
It is still unclear how exactly he got out of the premises without being detected.
Superintendent Abdul Latif Adamu, the Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Prisons Service, said the service deems the escape a severe security breach and is committed to recapturing the fugitive.
Mr Adamu revealed that they have obtained several leads that could potentially lead to the re-arrest of the Chinese.
He emphasized that the investigation was ongoing and authorities were doing everything in their power to rectify the security breach.
“We have gotten a lot of leads that are proving to be successful in what we are doing,” he said.
Meanwhile, the prison officer who accompanied the Chinese to the hospital has been interdicted by the service, pending a comprehensive investigation into the matter.
