Chief petitions IGP, Interior Minister to probe three senior police officers
Nana Kwabena Asante I, the Chief of Aboso, has petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, and the Minister for the Interior, Henry Quartey, to probe the conduct of three senior police officers stationed at the Western Central Regional Police Command.
The three officers in question are the Western Central Regional Police Commander, the Tarkwa Divisional Police Commander, and one cop at Aboso named Chief Inspector Joseph Bosman Amoakoh.
Nana Kwabena Asante I, Queen Mother Nana Akosua Akomaso, and other prominent figures in the traditional area signed the petition.
In the petition, the traditional leaders alleged that the conduct of the three police officers fell short of the high moral standards of the Ghana Police Service and that they have outlived their usefulness in the jurisdiction, particularly Chief Inspector Amoakoh.
“It is important to note that the activities of the Tarkwa Regional Police Command amount to the abuse of the rights of the people and a threat to the peace and security of the area, especially, the Aboso community and its environs,” an excerpt from the letter read.
The petition, filed at the Ministry for the Interior and the IGP’s office on September 11, 2024, outlined two main concerns.
Firstly, the police officers are accused of aiding “some miscreants and non-indigenous groups” in installing a rival chief at Aboso, despite the existence of a substantive chief recognized by law, customs, and traditions.
Again, the Western Central Regional Police Commander is accused of continuous verbal assaults on traditional leaders, including the Nifahene, who has threatened to sue if the behaviour continues.
The traditional leaders further called on the law enforcement agency to act swiftly before the case escalates.
“We appeal to your good office to treat this matter with the urgency it deserves before things escalate. As chiefs and elders, we do not want to compromise the peace and security of the Aboso community”.
