Chief One asserts performing in Ewe is no barrier; ‘They play my songs worldwide’
Chief One has asserted that performing in his native language, Ewe, has not impeded his progress internationally.
According to the singer-songwriter and rapper, he has recently earned a chart-topper in China and he has a massive following in America.
Chief One was in conversation with Accra-based TV3’s New Day crew AJ Sarpong, Roland Walker and Berla Mundi, Wednesday, April 19, 2023.
Roland asked if he gets invited to countries that have Ewe speaking communities.
“Yes, of course,” was Chief One’s quick response.
Again Roland wondered if, generally, his audience understands his language of choice as a music performer wherever he goes.
“You know, music itself is a language,” the singer stated, giving the impression that his language, though foreign to some people, is no challenge.
He explained by revealing that: “As we are talking now Top 100 China, my song is there.”
Amid amazement and hailing by his hosts, he added: “Yeah, my song is there. Young Boy is there.”
“They play my songs worldwide,” he said. “Apart from Ghana, my second most-streamed country is USA so it’s [performing in Ewe] working.”
Chief One, for the 24th edition of the premier and flagship music awards scheme in Ghana the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, has been nominated for the Best New Artiste award.
He shared that he finds the nomination as “normal because I work.”
In fact, he was “expecting more than that.”
According to the rising music star, he was anticipating a nomination for the Video of the Year category for his hit ‘Wotelewoea’.
“But all the same,” he remarked, giving an impression of holding no grudges. “We’re working.”
For international collaborations, he revealed that his team is in talks with artistes in “Nigeria, Togo and South Africa.”
Born Michael Ivan Kofi Nyagamagu, he desires for remixes, Togo’s Toofan on ‘Wotelewoea’ and Nigeria’s Olamide on his ‘Young Boy’.
