Chief Justice’s thinking on legal education is retrogressive, lacks common sense – Manasseh Azure
Freelance Investigative Journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni has waded into the ‘fight’ between some law students and the General Legal Council over calls to ‘open up legal education’
According to Manasseh, legal education in Ghana should not be left in the hands of any Chief Justice whose thinking appears retrogressive and position on the matter is neither supported by common sense nor grounded in research.
“We should not leave the fate of our legal education in the hands any Chief Justice whose thinking appears retrogressive and whose position on the matter is neither supported by common sense nor grounded in research,” the ace journalist posted on his Facebook page.
Manasseh’s frustration comes after the Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo has said “we need good lawyers, not lots of lawyers”.
The investigative journalist believes, the General Legal Council, the body mandated to provide overall oversight on the administration of Legal Education in Ghana and the professional training of lawyers, has not conducted itself well in handling the agitated students.
“The law students are not dumb. If there is any body or group that has acted very dumb in this matter, it is the General Legal Council, and not the law students,” he added.

The fight against injustice at the Ghana School of Law and legal education in Ghana must not stop. We should not leave the fate of our legal education in the hands any Chief Justice whose thinking appears retrogressive and whose position on the matter is neither supported by common sense nor grounded in research. Law is not rocket science. And the law students are not dumb. If there is any body or group that has acted very dumb in this matter, it is the General Legal Council, and not the law students.
