Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo has requested copies of petitions filed to remove her from office.
She requested in a letter to President John Dramani Mahama on Thursday, March 27, 2025.
In the letter, she asked the President to allow her access to the petitions to respond appropriately.
Her request comes after the presidency announced that President Mahama had initiated discussions with the Council of State after receiving three petitions calling for the removal of the Chief Justice.
However, the specifics of the petitions were not revealed.
Chief Justice Torkonoo, in her letter to the president, stressed the importance of due process and requested a fair opportunity to respond to the allegations against her before any further action.
“I am by this letter humbly and respectfully asking His Excellency the President and eminent members of the Council of State to forward the petitions against me to me and allow me at least seven days after receipt of the same to provide my response to you, which response can then form part of the materials that you conduct the consultation anticipated under 146(6), before the possible setting up of a Committee of Inquiry under Article 146(7),” parts of the letter read.
